Fun in the Sun

The summer sun and heat can be brutal, especially during hot months like July and August. As the temperatures rise, it is important that you and your family practice sun and heat safety so as to avoid injury, illness or irreparable skin damage. Stay safe from the sun’s harmful effects by following these easy steps.

Lather on the sunscreen. We all know to do this when we go to the beach or the pool, but what about daily sun exposure? It is important to apply “broad spectrum” sunscreen with a SPF of 15 or higher every day to keep your skin protected while going about your normal routine. When you are playing in the water or outside, be sure to use waterproof sunscreen to help it stay on longer.

Accessorize. Sunglasses that provide 100% UV protection and clothing that is lightweight, loose-fitting and covers large areas of skin are essential when going out in the sun. Be sure to choose light-colored items, as dark colors will absorb the sun’s rays.

If outdoors during peak hours of 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., be cautious of heat exhaustion. Excessive heat can lead to sunburn, heat cramps, exhaustion and even stroke. Be sure to find shade when you are getting too hot and drink plenty of cool water every 15-30 minutes.

By taking precaution and following these easy ways to stay cool, you’ll stay safe this summer season and still have plenty of fun in the sun!
